Biography
Dr. Daniel McCarthy is a Professor in the Department of Biology and Marine Science at the Marine Science Research Institute of СÀ¶ÊÓƵ where he serves as the Director of the Marine Science Undergraduate Program.   He teaches marine-related undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on providing students immersive field experiences in ecosystems including those in Jacksonville, the Keys, Bahamas, and Italy. His general research interests lie within marine benthic ecology and the reproduction of marine organisms. However, he primarily focuses on community interactions of fish and invertebrates on different types, sizes and shapes of reefs. Within this area, he has conducted research on coral reefs, nearshore hardbottom reefs and oyster reefs. In addition to exploring natural processes within these ecosystems, he has investigated various techniques and materials to restore lost reefs. This has included the study of living shorelines, substrates and shape of structures to replace lost nearshore hardbottom reefs , as well as the use of lab and field nurseries to grow and deploy stony coral outplants. He has published a number of peer-reviewed journal articles including a book that comprehensively covers the ecology and management of shallow water reefs from Cape Canaveral to north Miami , Florida. His research has been funded by the Nature Conservancy, Protect the Reef, Sea Grant, DEP, and City of Jacksonville. He has been awarded JU’s Excellence in Scholarly Activities, and Institutional Excellence Awards. Professor McCarthy currently lives on Ortega River on his sailboat with his wife and three daughters.
