On-Campus Employment & Social Security

Introduction

F-1 students are permitted to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week during Fall and Spring terms and up to 40 hours per week during Summer and Winter terms.

Applying to jobs does not guarantee job placement and a minimum grade point average of 2.0 must be maintained to continue on-campus employment. You may apply, interview, and accept a position on campus, but you will not be able to get paid until you have a social security number. International students are not eligible for the U.S. Federal Work Study Program (FWS) positions.

For a listing of on-campus jobs, check out Handshake and visit the Office of Career Design & Exploration located in the Moran Center for any resume, job search, etc. help you need.

Social Security Number (SSN)

The U.S. Social Security Administration is the government agency that issues SSNs. This number is an identification number issued to all U.S. citizens and to non-immigrants when they are employed in U.S. It is used predominantly for tax purposes. Before seeking a SSN, we advise that students visit the International Student Services office to discuss the application procedure.

January 2025 Update: Students can and then go to a local Social Security office to provide documentation within 45 calendar days. Students will be prompted to schedule an appointment after submission of the online application; walk-ins are no longer allowed.

  3. ISS will issue you a SSN Support Letter.
  4. Complete the online Social Security Application.
    • When asked "how should your name appear on the card," write your name as shown on your passport.

  6. You will receive text and email confiramtions when your appointment has been made. You should also receive a submission confirmation number which you must provide at the SSA office.
  7. Gather all the required documentation listed below and attend your appointment.
  8. If approved, you'll recieve a "receipt" at the office. Scan and send a copy to your supervisor. Your SSN card will then arrive in the mail within 2-ish weeks. If you live on campus, please ensure you have a PO Box (you can apply for one by stopping by the post office).
    • NOTE: The SS card is made of thick paper and not plastic. Keep the card and number safe (it's not recommended to keep it in your wallet) and submit a copy to your supervisor so that your hiring paperwork can be completed.
