Advising

The Davis Center for Professional Development offers student advising and career development opportunities.  

 

Advising is available in the Center, DCOB 262, from 9-5 Monday through Friday from our Peer or Staff Advisors. Walk-in or sign up for an appointment on Starfish.  

 

Our advising goals are to:

  • Proactively assist students in their exploration of personal, academic and career goals.
  • Provide accurate information about course progression(s), degree audits, and university policies.
  • Empower students to understand their own degree progress.

 

Heather HestonHeather Heston, Center Director

Director of Undergraduate Student Success 

After working at JU since 2016, Heather Heston was elevated to the Director of Undergraduate Student Success and the Davis Center for Professional Development in the Fall of 2021. She is also the Davis College of Business and Technology Undergraduate Internship Coordinator, which she started in the Summer of 2022.

Heather started at JU in 2016 as the Dean's Administrative Assistant after holding an administrative role at the College of Human Environmental Sciences at the University of Alabama. She was promoted in 2017 to Assistant Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Davis College of Business and Technology, which began her detailed oversight of our undergraduate programs.

Originally from Dunstable, England, Heather graduated from the University of Montevallo with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Management. She received her Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from СÀ¶ÊÓƵ.

Heather was an NCAA Student-Athlete on the University of Montevallo's Women's Golf Team. She lives in Jacksonville with her husband, son, and daughter. She enjoys spending time with her family, watching JU Athletic events, and exploring all that Jacksonville has to offer.

Tommie DavisJulia Velezon

Staff Advisor

Originally from Puerto Rico, Julia Velezon is a higher education professional specializing in Academic Advising, Student Affairs and Compliance, with over 13 years of progressive experience. Her passion for Business and Technology is rooted in two things, her daughter's love for technology and engineering and the advancement of technology in both real-world applications and education.

Over the years, she has had the pleasure of participating in mentorship programs, like Computing Loops and co-advise the Society for Women Advancing in Technology. When possible, Julia likes to take part in Diversity and Inclusion Committees, which focus to establish a stronger representation of underrepresented students by creating more intentional networking and mentoring opportunities. She’s highly motivated and excited to merge her love for advising and academics together to better serve our student population.
