Biography

Dr. Courtney A. Barclay is the Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs for the College of Law and a Professor of Communication and Law. She teaches variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. 

An expert in First Amendment law and policy, Dr. Barclay's research has been presented at national and international conferences. Her work focuses on the legal and ethical issues surrounding the use and regulation of emerging technology and new media platforms, including chat bots, online data tracking, drones, and social media. 

Dr. Barclay is committed to serving the professional and academic communities. She has served on governing boards  for the Florida Public Relations Association Jacksonville Chapter and the Law & Policy division for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, including developing a committee to promote women communication law scholars. A highlight of these experiences for Dr. Barclay is the opportunity to mentor junior faculty and young professionals. 

Before joining the JU faculty, Dr. Barclay taught communication law courses in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University and served as Visiting Scholar at the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a public interest research center in Washington, D.C.
